The Patriot
The Patriot became an iconic movie in pop culture for its beautiful aesthetics powerful music and excellence in modern cinema. However, this film is unpatriotic in it presentation of history. There are a few major historical inaccuracies in the film, the most forthright being the reason why Benjamin Martin went to war. In the film a church scene presents an unstirred clergyman preaching against the war when a young girl stands up and begs the men to go to war and fight for their country. A twenty first century movie style sob story follows and the men decide to go to war. Not only is this not accurate American history it is directly contradictory to the true revolutionary war history. During this time in history there was no separation of church and state, politics was addressed in the pulpit. The preachers were among the strongest proponents of fighting for freedom, some were in fact generals in the revolutionary war. Reverend John Muhlenberg said "There is a time for war and a time for peace," as he led some 300 members of his congregation to become the Eighth Virginia Regiment.
As a piece of artwork The Patriot was a well made film, but the history at best is an artistic distortion and at worst a deliberate attempt to remake American history.
